This used to be a rather nice French restaurant. Unfortunately [http://web.archive.org/web/20070329215609/http://archive.thisisoxfordshire.co.uk/2003/07/01/20273.html Ma Belle closed for good] in mid 2003.

I've been here twice: the first time they served up a very tasty couscous dish. The second was much less successful - despite giving forewarning of my being vegan, I ended up with a green salad starter followed by a green salad main course. I was not very impressed, and haven't been back since. Looking at the other (more positive) reviews, I assume that their usual chef must have been on holiday that week!

This is a small, upmarket French restaurant tucked away in [[Blue Boar Yard]] at the end of [[Wheatsheaf Passage]] off the [[High Street]]. The menu doesn
't really have very much on it for vegans, but the excellent chef can make some very decent vegan food off the cuff, sometimes by adapting an existing vegetarian dish from the menu. Calling ahead to warn that there will be a vegan in the party would be wise, and probably going at off-peak times would also help.

I first went here for an office Christmas lunch which was booked in advance. They made the soup of the day be vegan; it was a wonderfully smooth carrot soup, not too carroty, not too heavily spiced, just very well-balanced. My main course was a filo parcel of vegetables, including some very good wild mushrooms, served with a light tomato sauce and steamed vegetables. The dessert, which I was too full to eat, was a fruit salad with a spectacular spun-sugar thing decorating it. A very very enjoyable lunch.

I
've also been for dinner here; I don't think we called ahead that time. It was fairly early in the evening, so the place wasn't very busy. I had olives to start and then the mushroom tartlet from the menu, adapted with filo pastry instead of the non-vegan usual pastry. It was good.

Prices here are fairly high, but the cooking is worth it. You can also take your own wine, which helps.
