The Fuggle and Firkin has now turned into the Goose

Kake, 22 May 2001

I've heard a rumour that this might be closing down soon. No idea how true it is. They have also bulldozed the beer garden.

Kake, 22 Jan 2001

I'm not a big fan of Firkin pubs in general, but this is well worth coming to for food, if nothing else. Vegan options are Jacket Potato with Baked Beans at £2.95, Vegetable Chilli with Rice or Chips, garnished with Tortilla Chips (£4.45) or Thai Vegetable Curry with Rice and a Poppadom (£4.95). The Pasta with Mushrooms and Sundried Tomatoes (£4.95) may also be OK, but I'm not sure.

The Chilli is actually spicy (makes a change from most pub chillies) and very flavourful. The first time I had it, it was a bit thin, but they seem to have changed the recipe and it's now thick and delicious with several different kinds of beans. The Thai Curry is tasty and coconutty with interesting vegetables, but the portion isn't very big.

I'm told by several people that this isn't the friendliest of pubs, especially at closing time. I've not had any problems personally, other than the music level being over-loud. I think this one is best experienced at lunchtime in the Summer, when you can sit outside.
